Cognitive Counselling and Psychotherapy

Kasia Szymanska and Stephen Palmer

Cognitive therapy is an approach which combines the use of cognitive and behavioural techniques to help individuals modify their moods and behaviour by changing their self-defeating thinking. The therapist acts like a trainer, teaching clients techniques and strategies which they use to overcome their problems. It is used in the treatment of a number of psychological problems such as anxiety phobias and depression, in a variety of settings. These include the NHS, doctors’ surgeries and within the corporate training field, specifically with reference to stress management.

Further information about this therapeutic approach written by the author(s), can be found in "Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy: The Essential Guide"
